Callum May is the creator of a famous YouTube channel called The Canipa Effect, this channel is dedicated to create in depth analysis about anime series, movies, animation studios and animators as well. Even though Callum is not an animator nor an illustrator he has extensive knowledge on the techniques and principles used to create amazing scenes to the point that his understanding goes many times beyond of what many working animators currently have.

Callum May created The Canipa Effect in 2014 and since then has been highly recognized and viewed by professionals both in the US animation industry and the Japanese animation industry, he is also a features writer for Anime News Network and previously worked as a video editor for Crunchyroll and Otaquest, his banner was designed and illustrated by Leva Sau.

Henry Thurlow is a 2D animator working in the anime industry in Japan, he has worked in series like One Piece, Tokyo Ghoul, Naruto Shippuden, Jojo`s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, Overlord seasons 2 and 3 and others. Later he started a new studio with a friend called “D`Art Shtajio” where he’s directed projects like “Sturgill Simpson`s Sound and Fury”, “Indigo Ignited” & Castlevania Season 3 and now they have started a new blog & YouTube Channel where they’re putting their knowledge of the anime industry to the English speaking public.

Henry Thurlow started as a 2D animator in New York working in projects like Superjail, MGMT "Kids" music video & Ke$ha "Your love is my Drug" music video. He studied in Delaware College of Art and Design and Pratt Institute. He wanted to become an animator in the Japanese anime so he moved to Japan to become an English teacher and from there he started working in the industry from ground zero.

#83: INTERVIEW W/ THIERRY BOULANGER: Creative Director of Sabotage Studio

Thierry Boulanger is the Co-Founder, CEO and Creative Director of Sabotage Studio, founded in 2016 they’re looking to create retro-inspired video games. They quickly went from 3 employees to a team of 16 all working with towards the idea of creating modern video games that capture the compelling nature of old video games which was his passion since he was a kid. Their first game “The Messenger” (inspired on Ninja Gaiden) was launched in August 2018 and was critically acclaimed and won many awards including the “Best Debut Indie Game of 2018” Award in Los Angeles and the creators of Ninja Gaiden played and praised their game.

Thierry Boulanger and his amazing team are now working on their new video game called “Sea of Stars”, a retro inspired turn based RPG that made over $1.62 Million Canadian Dollars ($1.15 Million USD) in Kickstarter. Sabotage even got Yasunori Mitsuda to compose the music for Sea of Stars. Yasunori Mitsuda is a music composer who composed the music for Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, the Xenosaga series and Inazuma Eleven.

#82: INTERVIEW W/ ARRYN TROCHE: Fight & Body Action 3D Character Animator

Arryn Troche is a 3D character animator with a focus in action/body mechanics and fight animation. She attended the Savannah College of Art and Design and majored in animation with a specialization in dynamic/action animation and a minor in Concept Art for Video Games and has worked on he game Harbinger of Spring, as well as several student films that are coming out this June. She's also a graduating senior with a Bachelor in Fine Arts in Animation.

Arryn Troche also played piano for 16 years, was one of the winners in a New York Time poetry contest, and figure skate. Starting art in her freshman year of high school and animation in the following year and she became the lead animator on the student film The King and the Pawn. She has also worked as a 3D character animator in Panda-monium, John's Interview & Jitterbug. She's also a YouTuber of her free time.

Ethan Becker is a Visual Developer who worked in DreamWorks TV as a revisionist for Voltron Legendary Defender. He has experience as a Background Designer, Environment Design, Production Design who worked in Newbaby Productions and In My Father’s Shadow film. He’s originally from Texas and moved to California to look for more opportunities as a creative professional. Now he's working on a secret project with a secret company which will make an announcement with Netflix in 2021 and helping other people improve as an artist through his YouTube Channel.

Ethan Becker is a very stoic figure, he knows how to survive and camp in the wild without any luxuries, so realizing that in California he would find more opportunities he moved there and lived in his car until he got a job at DreamWorks. He was raised by his grandparents who instilled in him a great work ethic.

Hedvig H-S or also known as VixieArts is a Concept Artist, Freelance Illustrator and Comic Book Artist who has created art for books, animation, magazines and even worked in video games. And now she's the author of her own graphic novel called Aurora the Unicorn. She also has created a following of 183K+ fans on instagram where she posts her illustrations and mostly a lot of animal drawings.

Hedvig H-S is originally from Gothenburg, Sweden, where she studied comic art and have been working since. First as a Comic Book Artist from 2004 to 2009, then in the video game industry from 2009 to 2014 and now as a Layout Artist and Art Director at Slugger Film AB. Her idea of "Aurora the Unicorn" came to her in one afternoon, which she wrote down and had an email from an editor asking for a new script for a book, she gave her that idea and two years later she had a graphic novel done out in the market.

Jenn Ely is based in Portland, OR, where she works as a freelance production designer and visual development artist for various commercial, film, and television animation projects. She began working as a gallery artist after her traditional painting focused BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She later attended Savannah College of Art and Design in the Illustration program, where she discovered her love of design for story telling. She left SCAD to work with Laika Studios as an Art Intern, where she worked on her first animated project, The Boxtrolls in 2012. She has been working in animation ever since, designing colors, environments, characters, and props on a variety of 2D, Cg, VR, and stop motion projects.

Most recently, she has been working as an illustrator on Netflix's upcoming stop motion animated feature, Wendell & Wild, written by Jordan Peele and Henry Selick, and Directed by Selick. She has also been freelancing as a visual development artist with Locksmith Animation on an upcoming feature, a handful of animated TV series pitches with Dreamworks TV, as well as a variety of commercial pitches and productions for frequent clients, House Special and Bent Image Lab. Her most recent completed project as Production Designer, was season one of The Shivering Truth for Adult Swim, a stop motion series Directed by Cat Solen and Vernon Chatman made at Shadow Machine.

Erin Shin has also worked as a concept artist for JM Animation Studios in Seoul, South Korea and created 12 anthropomorphized designs of Chinese folk heroes as well as 4 Chinese scholar characters and she's currently an intern at Super 78 creating concepts for VR Threater experiences in Silverlake, California.

Wouter Tulp is a freelance character designer based in the Netherlands. He is known for his versatility as an illustrator, lavishing over a hundred children’s books with his wonderful illustrations, as well as creating caricatures and editorial illustrations in high-circulation newspapers and magazines. He is also a teacher in Schoolism.

Since then, he has slowly shifted his focus towards character design. After a series of international film projects, he is currently working for Sony Pictures Animation. He started out his career as a freelance illustrator in the Netherlands, creating many different kinds of illustration, like children’s books illustration, book covers, newspaper illustration and caricatures. This variety of work helped him shape and refine his technique and craft, that eventually led him to becoming a versatile character designer for feature animation. He is extremely passionate about his work, and he loves to share what he learns everyday.

Eve Skylar is a production designer and storyteller with experience in creative and visual development for VR | AR, feature animation, tv, live action, publishing, and interactive games. She did the production design in the award-winning and oscar qualifying animated short "La Noria" by Carlos Baena of Pixar, which premiered at Siggraph Vancouver 2018 and is currently winning over 40 awards and screened at worldwide film festivals.

Previously, Eve was the project lead concept artist on Google's Daydream AR/VR team where she worked on product pitches and with her team and launched the first Google IP of AR Stickers on all Pixel phones, worked on original concept product and art pitch to CEO Sundar on AR Walking and Animal Character Navigation, demo was featured at Google I|O 2018 and VR Environment designs for the Daydream Welcome Homeworld and Expeditions.

Tom Booth is an author, illustrator, and art director. Born on the twelfth day of the twelfth month, Tom made his earliest marks — sometimes on his parents’ antique kitchen table — growing up just outside of Philadelphia. Tom has had the good fortune to work with Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, Workman Publishing, Nicktoons, and Scholastic.

Tom attended Hamilton College where he majored in history and mark-making, otherwise known as studio art. After graduating, Tom moved to New York City to begin working for Scholastic, so that he could afford a table for more mark making. Eventually, Tom made enough marks to convince the wonderful publishers at Simon & Schuster that he was ready for his first picture book, Derek Jeter Presents Night at the Stadium, which became a #1 bestseller on Amazon. Currently, Tom lives in Brooklyn with his fiancée, one normal cat named Luna, and one highly unstable cat named Rory.

Kirsten Winkelbauer is an illustrator and designer based out of San Francisco. She graduated with a BFA in Illustration from Academy of Art University and currently works as a full-time freelancer. Her work focuses on fun, brightly colored characters and imagery, and she enjoys experimenting with new mediums often.

In addition to freelance illustration and graphic design, she plays with jewelry making and crafting with materials ranging from resin to stamp making to laser cut wood. She enjoys selling her work at expos, craft shows and conventions, and recently began delving into the world of mural painting.

Kurt Chang started his studies of art under her grandmother in Taiwan using Chinese watercolor to do paintings where he learned the basics of art before even knowing that animation was a career. Then he began his professional training in Las Vegas Academy doing a visual arts program where he learned more about fine arts and learned many traditional methods for painting like oil, acrylic, watercolor and more. Then for four years he studied character animation and story art in the digital media department at Otis College Art & Design.

Now he's a freelance artist working from home and he keeps painting on the side for fun. Today Kurt shares with us his experience on learning animation and becoming a better artist and the transition from being a traditional painter to becoming an animator.

Channing Winget has a BFA in Illustration from Brigham Young University in Idaho, she's been doing art since she was little, however in her path she joined a Pokemon Community in which they were making plushies about Pokemons, and she started doing that as well and started to make commissions and sell them and then it evolved naturally to making her own designs and selling them online and having her own small business about that.

In this interview Channing Winget talks about the challenges that she faced when trying to create products to satisfy a bigger demand without losing quality, how she solved those challenges and how illustrators can create an income by creating a secondary product from their own creations.

Ethan Becker is a very stoic figure, he knows how to survive and camp in the wild without any luxuries, so realizing that in California he would find more opportunities he moved there and lived in his car until he got a job at DreamWorks. He was raised by his grandparents who instilled in him a great work ethic.

Among other things, Kristen worked as a graphic designer intern for CSI: Miami for two seasons and is currently the Chief Creative Officer for the Cal Poly Varsity Club.

Kristen Sanzari has a MFA in Visual Development for animation from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and a BFA in Graphic Design from California Polytecnic State and currently lives in Hermosa Beach in California. We found Kristen in CTNX 2016, she’s been attending the event for the last 5 years and she will be there this year showing her new book at table T006.

He won many championships, performed in America and Australia, an action figure of himself was made and also found time to do some hiphop music and won 4 gamer world records for fun. Then he moved to LA in order to pursue his life in the art world, and this time he focused completely on this for 2 years and managed to gain great experience from it.

He started as a business consultant but after meeting some artists he decided to change careers and dedicated himself into art, worked at Pixar for many years and learned a lot about the process of creating great stories and then quit his job to enter the Art Center College of Design to learn more on how to become a great artist. He started publishing his books and now he's founded the Storyteller Academy where he can teach people online how to create and publish their own books with amazing results.

Arree Chung has worked in the games industry as a Designer and Art Director in the last decade. He has a new book called "Ninja Claus" coming out this Christmas and a new book called Mixed where he uses color theory to teach about diversity to kids coming out next year. So far he has published more than 7 books and plans to do more in the future.

#46: INTERVIEW W/ SIMON WILCHES CASTRO: Director at Titmouse

Simon Wilches Castro is the Creative Director at Titmouse Studio. Born in Popayán, Colombia. He Studied Visual Arts in Bogotá, Animation in Cuba and an MFA in the United States. Back in Colombia he used to do political and social satire and cartoons and got himself in trouble because of it. Now he's a director at Titmouse Studios Los Angeles. Other work includes TBS in Japan, directed projects for Disney TV, Starburns industries, Netflix, Apple, Universal and Adult Swim. His films have screened in festivals around the world like Annecy, Hiroshima and Ottawa and has won awards including a double Adobe Design Achievement Award, an Annie Award Nomination and two Student academy award semifinalist nominations. He was awarded the FULBRIGHT Fellowship for artists in 2011.

Simon Wilches Castro started very small in Popayan, which was a small town with barely any computers available. When he grew he applied to Visual Arts in Bogota and got accepted. Later he went to Cuba to get more classes and become better at animation. He started doing a lot of political satire in a web show as that was present a lot in Colombia. Eventually he won an Scholarship to do a Masters in Animation and Digital Art USC School of Cinematic Arts at Los Angeles.

#45: INTERVIEW W/ ARI GIBSON: Hollow Knight & Team Cherry

Ari Gibson is the Co-Founder & Co-Director of Team Cherry, a video game studio in Adelaide Australia. They created the video game success known as Hollow Knight. They launched Hollow Knight as a Kickstarter project and asked about $35,000 Australian dollars but they got $57,138 AUD and through that they were able to complete the game through hard work and dedication. He previously ran the animation studio Mechanical Apple and has worked on countless projects across film, games and music videos. Ari's been modding games from before computers were colour and has loved them since his first ever game rental: Faxanadu for NES.

William Pellen also joined our interview for a bit. William has been designing and building games for years, and loves to create silly little worlds for people to poke around in and explore. He’s been enraptured with games ever since his Dad found the wing boots for him in Zelda 2, and wants to recreate that experience of adventure and excitement for other people.

Ari Gibson also talks to us about the challenges that it took to make Hollow Knight, the challenges to take this game into multiple platforms like the Nintendo Switch, a bit about the previous DLC called Hidden Dreams and the new Halloween DLC incoming called The Grimm Troupe, Team Cherry is a team of 5 people, yet they created a great and huge video game with many details to explore. There's much to learn from them specially when starting out with limited resources.

#44: INTERVIEW W/ CHRISTOPHE VACHER: Art Director & Painter

Christophe Vacher is a two-time Emmy Award winner, an Art Director, Concept Artist & Painter, he has worked with companies such as Disney, DreamWorks, Universal Studios and the film industry since 1989. He worked on projects such as Treasure Planet, Fantasia 2000, Hercules, Tarzan and the animated segment on the Disney live movie Enchanted and on the CG feature film "9" produced by Tim Burton and was nominated for an Annie Award (the equivalent of the Academy Award in animation) and also worked in the visual development of Despicable Me and is currently working for Hasbro studios on the CG animated Transformers TV series.

Christophe Vacher also works on paintings for art galleries and collectors from all over the world. He's originally from France where he started his career in animation and eventually moved to Los Angeles to work and learn more about art and animation. He taught himself most of his skills and on the side he also travels the world and has studied many martial arts like Judo, Viernamese and Chinese Kung Fu, Karate, Savate-French Boxing, Yoseikan Budo, Taekwondo, English boxing, Kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do, and many more. He also practices Swing dancing, Salsa, horseback riding and cooking. So Christophe has learned a lot of tricks on how to manage time and learning many skills.

#43: INTERVIEW W/ DARIA COHEN: The Night

Daria Cohen is an animator and illustrator from Israel. She's the creator of the animation "The Night" which became viral and reached over 2.4 million views. After that she created the sequel to the first story called "The Land of the Dead" and currently is working on the third part to the story. She made those animations completely on her own and keeps doing so from a country which still doesn't support animation as a career, but with the power of the internet she's been able to find her own audience.

Daria Cohen is currently working as a commercial animator, but her goals are to be able to create stories & projects of her own and being able to work in more creative projects in the future. While she is very young, she started at a very early age, and as an introvert she dedicated completely to her art making comics, and by having a brother who worked in animation she was able to have a mentor from very start and all those years of practice have paid off.

Marta Andreeva is a Character Designer and Illustrator from Bulgaria, she has studied in FH Potsdam in Germany. Learned from Aaron Blaise, Nathan Fowkes and Stephen Silver. She started working as a freelance artist for Bubu Studio in Bulgaria, then as an illustrator in StenArts in Berlin and she was the Background and Layout Designer and the Lead Character Designer in The Golden Apple and now is working in The SPA Studios on the project Klaus.

Marta Andreeva has learned to use the internet to her favor. She has gotten many opportunities to work on projects she love 100% online. And currently she moved to Spain to work with Sergio Pablos on Klaus the movie. An opportunity she also got using the internet. She also has improved her skills using the internet through online courses like Schoolism and Aaron Blaise.

Katia Grifols is a visual developer from Spain who's the founder of Glow In The Dark Concept Studio and has worked in many projects creating the environments, props, characters, costumes, color scripts and more. She developed the color script and keyes for The Golden Apple and did a design test for Star vs the forces of Evil for Disney XD. She also has worked in the comic industry and her art has been published in many books, magazines and events.

Katia Grifols has also worked in companies like Dream Works and Disney Consumer products. She had to move to the US to get more opportunities and faced many hardships there, however she overcame those problems and was able to integrate to the industry and started getting projects all over the world. She had to move from the comics industry to the Visual Development industry in order to get more projects. We found her amazing work at CTNX last year.

Alli White grew up in Idaho, in an area where illustration and art was not seen as the main thing to do, and she tried to do other careers just to find out that she wasn't good at it and that she hated it, but thanks to the internet she was able to get her art to the world and find a lot of people who did not only loved her art, but also where willing to pay for it. She's originally from Versailles, France but also has worked in Los Angeles. Currently she's working on other volumes and on the art book about Marie-Antoinette and Versailles.

We found Camille Raveau's work in CTNX last year, and we decided to contact he. She's passionate about animation and she studied art story and cinema and audiovisual art in Paris. Then she learned graphic novel art and illustration.

Alina Chau is an experienced illustrator, animator and book author from Hong Kong living in Los Angeles with more than 10 years in experience in the animation and video game industry. She also has published many books like Double Happiness, The Year of the Sheep, The Treehouse Heroes and more.

Alina Chau also has a successful only store and a YouTube channel where she does Art Tutorials. We found Alina's work in CTNX last year, she also was recommended to us by Casey Robin in a previous interview. Once we found her work we knew why. Alina Chau is a well rounded artist with many years of experience in many areas of art, which is rarely seen as many people specialize in one area.

Elaine Ho is a Concept Artist and Illustrator with a degree in Pyschology who almost became a Lawyer, but chose to stop, think and find her passion in art. She studied Entertainment Design at the Art Center College of Design and later became a concept artist for theme park and virtual reality experiences. Now she’s focusing on creating a new illustrated novel. Her art has been featured at Spectrum and The Sixth Equinox.

We found Elaine Ho’s work in CTNX last year, as he’s been going to that event for years, he also has many tips on networking, getting jobs at big studios, making a great portfolio and also as a teacher, he also has great advice on how to put everything you know into a single piece of art.
